I would recommend waiting to rent Mary Poppins Returns.
This movie was heavy in it’s story line which weighed the movie down to a depressing level of entertainment and a few scenes were scary looking. The Big Ben scene though at first seems impressive was completely impossible. This scene truly needed more magic from the start to make it work with the premise of the movie. In fact, a lot of scenes really needed to be more magical to engage all ages of viewers especially the very young. Many older kids at the movies kept chatting with each other and getting up for more refreshments instead of being enraptured in the charm (because it lacked charm) of a Mary Poppins movie. Music was not memorable. Each actor’s character was given a secondary story line from the main thread of the story which made it seem choppy, disconnected and unnecessary. Blunt’s performance lacked underlaying warmth for the children. Mary Poppins character sparkled when scenes were only focused on Mary Poppins herself, which added to the disconnected feeling of the movie.
The actors did perform well but they could only carry a movie so far on their acting skills, the movie just was not written as well as it should have been.
In short, I did become bored during the movie and if a friend asks me about it, I would tell them to wait and rent it if they want to see it.
