It’s no west wing or house of cards, that’s for sure.
The dialogue is clunky and sometimes unbearable.
Geopolitical intrigue which the show should be full of is non existent.
Characters are flat.
It’s a shame. A show like this could of had promise. But the show overextends itself by trying to focus on the secratary’s family (and hopelessly annoying kids) as well as her staff and their personal lives.
And speaking of her staff the show tries to recreate the “group of idealists trying to do the right thing” dynamic of the west wing without having the believable characters and great writing that makes it work.
The secretary herself is a bit too flawless to be interesting. She doesn’t have the flaws of Carrie mathison of homeland or the intellect of Jed bartlet of the west wing. Her CIA career could have been a source of past guilt for her but besides a one episode arc about her use of enhanced interrogation, it’s not really pursued. In the end she’s a bit like captain marvel. A cool, strong but ultimately boring character.
In the end I can’t really recommend this show as worth the watch. It’s writing and acting just isn’t up to par with the genre it’s a part of.
