In the first episode there's a scene where the protagonist goes to take his car to work but can't because it's out of gas. He bikes instead. Some bikers pass him and insult him for no reason. The show made a point to portray biking as annoying and bikers as petty/cruel. When really this character should be biking to work every day weather permitting since he still made it nearly on time despite having failed to account for the additional commute time. It's not responsible to present general audiences with negative portrayals of socially responsible behaviors. Biking when you can is good for your health and good for the environment. Shame on the writers and producers of this show and shame on Apple. This isn't the only cut the show takes at socially responsible habits. It's not hard to include positive messages in media yet this show goes out of it's way to do the opposite. One star.

Starts off weak. Some of the early scenes the original Dune movie did better, for example the Gom Jabar scene and the scene of Gurney preparing Paul prior to departure. The new Dune didn't so much botch these scenes as the original nailed them. Even so the new versions come off the worse for the comparison and I expect anyone who's seen both versions would agree with this assessment. However after the Atreides arrive at Dune the movie hits it's stride and I ceased finding it jarring in light of it's prior incarnation. While the Old Baron was among the more memorable stock villains ever brought to life on the big screen the new Baron offers something more than exaggerated evil and in so doing allows for greater narrative depth in virtue of leaving more to the imagination. Here the Harkonnen are villains but not horror movie monsters. Arguably given what Dune's about the Harkonnen as horror movie monsters is the more fitting depiction but at this point that remains to be seen. What's Dune really about, anyway? Worms?
