Starts off weak. Some of the early scenes the original Dune movie did better, for example the Gom Jabar scene and the scene of Gurney preparing Paul prior to departure. The new Dune didn't so much botch these scenes as the original nailed them. Even so the new versions come off the worse for the comparison and I expect anyone who's seen both versions would agree with this assessment.
However after the Atreides arrive at Dune the movie hits it's stride and I ceased finding it jarring in light of it's prior incarnation. While the Old Baron was among the more memorable stock villains ever brought to life on the big screen the new Baron offers something more than exaggerated evil and in so doing allows for greater narrative depth in virtue of leaving more to the imagination. Here the Harkonnen are villains but not horror movie monsters.
Arguably given what Dune's about the Harkonnen as horror movie monsters is the more fitting depiction but at this point that remains to be seen. What's Dune really about, anyway? Worms?
