I see so many comparisons to the animated movie: the dragon should have been there, missed the songs, there wasn’t an ending with Mulan and her man.
This was a progressive and serious take on the story and plot. No dragon, but the spirit of her ancestors were with her in the form of the Phoenix. It guided her to where she needed to go to find her honor and save the empire. The was a movie about war and honor, and the lack of singing didn’t take away from that. In fact, it kept the focus on the serious journey of a young woman with an identity crisis who wanted to bring honor and safety to her family. There was a touch of romance that was incorporated in a way that didn’t take away from the theme of the movie: a woman can bring honor to their family without following society or tradition.
I loved this movie and thought it was well made. I can’t wait to watch again!
