The only thing more difficult than deciding how many 🌟 to give this game is the game itself.
I really enjoy console 'survival' games. Ark, The Forest, Dayz, Don't Starve, Dying Light, and whatever else you want to put in this category... if it involves Inventory Management/Crafting/Resource Gathering and staying alive then odds are that I'll enjoy it to some degree.
Each of the aforementioned games has their strengths and weaknesses and how a player weighs those will be obviously come down to personal preference. Unfortunately for Green Hell, it takes some of my least favorite elements of the game genre.
Inventory- For me, the inventory menu and crafting system are most similar to The Forest(which i liked once I got used to it), except in everything in Green Hell takes at least twice as many steps to create/manage. Different compartments of the backpack hold different types of items, scroll to the next compartment.
Resources- The first task in the tutorial is to make a fire which requires sticks. Pretty straightforward until you realize there are 3 different sizes of sticks. I don't know how many different types of mushrooms there are but its at least 6, each with their own effects on health/hunger/sanity/carbohydrate/thirst meters. Some will dehydrate, some will cure/cause food poisoning or infection or rash or parasites. (Now apply the above to Fruits, Vegetables and Nuts that can also be found in the jungle in Hell).
Trial and error wouldn't be such a bad way to find out the effects of each except odds are that your character is already suffering from one of the above issues. Also there's a good chance you've got some leeches on you or a cut somewhere on your body that needs attention (your character needs daily examinations of your limbs which is a process in and of itself). It felt like I was always playing from behind because in the process of trying to fix whatever was ailing me, I've picked up 2 new problems.
If the review so far hasn't made it obvious, this game is tough. Like really really tough. A few tweaks to the difficulty sliders make the experience a bit more enjoyable but really just prolonging the inevitable while the fundamental weaknesses still stay the same.
Green Hell isn't a game about surviving in the Amazon, its a game about dying in the Amazon. Over and over and over and over again. In some Survival games the sheer number of different ways to die can make it more exciting and even frustrating (frustration makes great fuel for motivation).
The most telling aspect of Green Hell isn't how frustrated it leaves you, its the absence of frustration, replaced with Nihilistic feelings of hopelessness, despair, and leaves players asking 'why bother?' because if its not a spider that gets you then it'll be a scorpion... or a snake... or a frog... or an animal.... or tribesmen.
