It may be too slow for some people, but the dawning reality that an act that might have much lesser consequences in modern life could get you killed in young America, leads to a real sense of dread. Even the perceived age of America is mentioned (verbally) in passing, but is visually referenced often.
A great woman director's view of male folly, friendship, and cruelty gives the film an unforgettable atmosphere. Just like the films of Hitchcock, Wilder, Chaplin, Wenders and other non-American directors, with their unique and quirky visions of America and Americana, sometimes an outsider's view is more acutely observed.
