I'm giving it 5 stars for many reasons.
1. I really enjoyed being terrorized by H.P. Lovecraft's short stories as a young Black boy like Atticus Freeman, the main protagonist in this show. Before it premiered I did not know much about the author, H.P. Lovecraft's personal history, except, I always remembered an excerpt from a book of his I once checked out when I was that weird, horror & scifi obsessed kid in the library. In the preface it read something along the lines of "Lovecraft was only 14 years old when he wrote a few of these blood curdling, horrifying short stories" it was at that point that I voraciously read it and a few others because they are pretty well written, entertaining and, addictive if you like that sort of stuff. Him being an overt or covert racist never occured to me, i didnt know that. I was just inspired and super impressed that they could be penned by such a young talent. I had been a fan since. (Shout-out to young Diana & Orinthia Blue. All young writers are pretty cool!!)
2. I guess I wasn't a big fan after all, because I also wasn't aware of Matt Ruff's 2016 book, "Lovecraft Country" on which the HBOMax show is based. I know its as eloquent and utterly as horrifying as this show & even those stories by the original horror master. I'm so glad Matt was inspired by Lovecraft works enough to tell this insane story. I'm excited to read Lovecraft Country the novel one day very soon now.
3. I really didn't want the show to end! Everyone did a terrific job ...although it was sometimes painful to watch the ugly truths illustrating the United States' gruesomely vicious, segregated past. The show really stuck to realism and authenticity for the cruel time it's set in, even when the awesome soundtrack bounced back and forth to the 21st century lol. Lovecraft Country is hella scary, weird, haunting & addictive. The magical spin on the abject terror of surviving Jim Crow's America was pretty original. I have not reviewed anything in a while this is just my opinion of the show after digesting that outrageous finale.
