I was intrigued from the get go. As a former Mental Health nurse, I knew right away Alice was a victim, had been traumatized early in life. She had intellectualized all of it which is the highest defense mechanism. The degree to which she was “triggered “ revealed it started when she was young and that it had become ritualistic. She knew her brokenness. I don’t see the character as narcissistic. She knew she was incapable of a healthy relationship.
What she did not expect was a man like Jack who had an emptiness from his childhood. His character revealed a depth she could not really relate to.
I still am processing this series. The writing is nothing short of incredible as is the acting. All of the characters were written so well. Both Jack and Alice understood his daughter’s conflicted process. Both of them had the depth of character to not to force her process or control it.
I can only surmise the writer has a deep well to draw from and has educated himself extensively in behavioral patterns. As a whole we collectively underestimate the uncountable perspectives of genetics and development. I also worked in hospice. The acceptance Jack had in his dying was beautiful. Thank you for a deeply moving tale. The acting was also exquisite.
