This began in a promising fashion, but about a third of the way through the book, the romance between the two main characters was clumsily drawn and some of the writing was very cheesy. This meant that the characters became irritating and the romance was not really convincing. The background story suddenly sped up and it lost the suspense and became humdrum and clichéd. Some interesting ideas but weaknesses in plot and writing meant this novel lost its way and became repetitive and predictable.

This is a sad book in many ways. It's strength lies in how we often don't see the good in selfless people and how we are often deceived because of our own self deception, even at an unconscious level
It is well done and evocative of its time.

Loved the books and the new series is very faithful to those. Loved the original series and I expected not to like new one. But it's excellent. Samuel West is brilliant as Siegfried. Spot on. James Herriot is also well played. Much more convincing than Christopher Timothy with real emotional range. Also enjoying Tristian. Well cast and captures character really well. The scenery and period detail are wonderful Watching it with my fourteen year old daughter who has enjoyed the original repeats but absolutely loves the new one It's fantastic. Well done Channel 5

This film was a huge disappointment. The dreadful structure meant that plot and character development were minimal. Complex characters were reduced to crude stereotypes. Events of magnitude were underplayed and did not induce emotion. This is the first time I have been left dry eyed by Little Women. Laurie professing his love for Jo. Completely underwhelming on both sides. Even Beth's death was not moving. Felt like characters were just reading lines not embodying the parts. The last scene with Jo being told by family members that she loves the Professor was simply bizarre and summed up how out of touch with the novel this film actually is.
In contrast to the emotional range of the novel the relationships between the characters in the film had no depth and were simplistic and unnuanced. Examples included Jo and Aunt March. Beth and Laurie's grandfather. Jo's relationship with the Professor had less time or significance afforded it than a Tinder date.
Marmee as played by Dern was not the strong and beloved figure readers of the book identify with. Susan Sarandon was far more believable. Emma Watson was Emma Watson. This was the director rehashing Ladybird badly and giving us a sixth form lesson on feminism. Hugely over rated
