This production was Rita Moreno's wet dream. Spielberg's direction was like watching Back to the Future set to most of Bernstein's score and Sondheim's lyrics.
I have no doubt that given the chance for the current ensemble, except for
this Bernardo and this Anita, to do the original parts as originally scripted could have done a great job. They're all very talented.
However, this touchstone of the American film iconography should have been left alone.
This production will not hold up over time and it's already a flop.
Those folks who are fans of the original and know it, will sit through this shaking their heads in disappointment as I did all through the flick.
