Sooo much angst! Holy moly!
I was a big Twilight fan as a teen, and I'm so glad that Stephanie Meyer managed to finish this book, but you could tell it was hard for her. It was pretty hard for me to read in the end, honestly.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but Edward Cullen kinda sucks.
He brings the story down with his self-hatred, his pessimism, and his patronizing attitude towards "the love of his life". I mean, Jesus, in the first book, he really never takes her seriously, lets her choose, or EXPLAINS his motivations. The end of this book, he's completely convinced that their relationship will end, and fabricates a life for her future, without considering who she is or what she wants, to make himself feel better.
Yeah, not the greatest relationship. He just causes so much unnecessary suffering and even though all his actions are based around her, it's ironically self-centered, not listening to her, or considering her feelings to be on par with his. (eye roll)
This is kind of a SPOILER for the second book:
I gotta say, what really pissed me off was that he saw what would happen if he left her, but left anyway, somehow not believing that her pain would be that much. She would TELL him that she loved him, he would think "I know", but considered her feelings for him to be less than his for her, which somehow justified his behavior. Yuck.
This series made me realize how much I can't stand a story where the plot is driven by a bunch of miscommunication.
Thanks for the nostalgia, but I'm not feeling as good as I did when I started this book.
