I’ve just finished watching this movie and honestly, I’d say that it’s spot on in capturing how most of us black people feel towards white people everywhere we go. Now I can agree that they could’ve picked a better title but after watching it, I can understand why the creator chose this title. However, this movie isn’t necessarily speaking about racism or being a sob story on how black people are mistreated. Not even a profit on racism either as I’ve read the negative reviews this movie has received and taking them into consideration as I’m typing this review. I can understand how people that have written a review like this can perceive it in that way. I’m not writing this to say that they’re wrong for thinking and believing that, but to consider it in a different view or context from a “magical black person” in America’s society if you will. In my opinion, this captures and is making a voice on how black people can feel inferior or outright stressed/nervous around white people sometimes wether they know them or not anywhere they go especially in the workforce or in public as this movie captures that specifically. Why you might ask? Because of the stereotypes that are built around the regular everyday black individual. I know how we as a society today have moved on and accepted black people in this world, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen still, does it?Its probably the main thing that runs through a black persons mind when around white people. And also how if they might act in those stereotypical terms in the slightest it might make everything go wrong. That would make you nervous wouldn’t it? This makes me nervous too as sometimes this runs through my mind when I’m around or just simply existing around white people wether I know them or not, at times. I’m a 6’3 black young man that’s probably been stereotyped in public and I’ve definitely been nervous about it. I’m not writing this to make it a sob story or ask for comfort or reassurance but as a perspective, keep that in mind. As I finish writing this I have one question for those that think negatively about this movie whether you’ve watched it or not. If you were an everyday black person having to worry about this everyday when you leave your home to when or if you return, wouldn’t you feel the same way? Thank you for reading this and potentially reconsidering your thought on this movie, maybe rewatch it too with this question in mind.
