I didn't read the books, but this movie is bad. I will start with the positives though. It has an excellent score, amazing cinematography and CGI, and the scale is huge. The scene with the sandworm and the spice miner is one of the best scenes I have seen in a while. However, every other action scene is white noise. The movie starts with 45 minutes of people spewing proper nouns at one-another, a lot of boring dialogue that doesn't progress the plot nor entertain the audience, and empty characters. There wasn't a single character I cared about, at least in the first half. None of them had really anything that got me to care for them. Paul was the best character just because he had some form of inner conflict, but he was such a passive protagonist. He was led from plot point to plot point without actively doing anything, and it was really annoying. All of the other characters were defined by their skills and not by the personality. The villain was really shallow and weird, and he didn't do anything the whole movie. All of the scenes after the first sand worm scenes were incredibly boring because you didn't care about anyone. Seeing the city get blown up had no impact because I didn't care about the people who lived in that city. It was just white noise and colors and loud explosions. The movie didn't end. The climax happened an hour into the 2 and a half hour movie. The final part was a fight scene that lasted a minute and a half that had like 30 cuts in it. I assume it is because the movie assumed it would be successful enough to get a part-2. This movie bored me to death. Still, there are things to be appreciated, regardless of how few and in between they are. 2 stars from me.
