Haters will hate, but this movie was good, not great.
I was holding my breath for this movie to come out and saw it at my first chance. It felt great to see Tom Cruise and his old gang back together. But as the movie progressed, I came to a mixed conclusion. First, 2 hours and 43 minutes is too long for a movie! And to my surprise, I found only then that this was part 1 of a 2 part finale.
Now this is where I think they took it too far. We are now 7 movies into this awesome and iconic movie series and it feels like this chapter did not do justice to it. Yes the action sequences are great, but that is not even the point, they have always been great! In this chapter, even the villain seemed weakly written; especially since they showed that he was so significant in Ethan's past and that Ethan and he had a sour and violent past. Solomon Lane was so much superior as a villain earlier!
The plot felt like it was stretched too thin. The introduction and the back story of the villain seemed rushed and did not seem to fit well with the plot and story so far. And the fact that the movie was that long, did not help either! In the end, I was left feeling that they would have ended the series on a high note if they ended it with Mission: Impossible – Fallout!
Don't get me wrong. I love Tom Cruise and this entire series. This movie had great moments too, but sadly I found the earlier movies to be a tad bit better. And it just feels that with this series they are now milking this cow dry instead of giving it a dignified ending.
