Sensational. A penetrating and totally absorbing novel set in France immediately after First World War. Examines societal attitudes towards returning soldiers and their plight. Superbly drawn characters with deep psychological insights. Compelling read.

The Packhorse Library in Kentucky circa 1930's deserves better than this poorly constructed overlong novel. Characters lack dimension with cutesy ending. Melodramatic plot lines undermine the potentially dynamic subject. Give it a miss.

Ponderous and so so slow with an over abundance of explanations. Every aspect of this novel is explained over and over; assuming the reader has some sort of cognitive impairment. The gentle wit is sharp and redeeming though.
