I came to this show backwards from what I'm seeing here. I tried to read the books when they came out, and was bored to tears! I managed to slog thru a Discovery of Witches, but had no interest in reading the rest. Found the book WAY to dry and felt like it was more of the author trying to show all her knowledge, and stuff in a lot of scenes/verbiage that did not drive the story at all. And talk about Cheesy.....
When the TV series came out I had nothing to do one night, and gave it a try. LOVED IT! The characters were so much better than the books. Book Matthew was a total dick, and book Diana was slightly unhinged and way to prickly to care about. But I loved the TV characters, all of them. I loved them so much that I went back and read the books -- all three - just to get more background to fill in the show. The second and third books were hard to get thru, but I did it! Fell asleep a few times but I persevered!!
Now I'm really looking forward to the next seasons. Cannot wait.
