Not my cup of tea. If you watch the film, you will get the joke in that first sentence. Seriously, though, I concur with some of the other negative reviews in this thread: 1. the movie was too long even though it was only 90 minutes long, 2. it was filmed in such a way that the actors' faces were often barely visible 3. and their voices were barely audible. The exception to that was young Mika who screamed her tantrums from time to time. Her parents were emotionally ineffectual and disconnected from life and from each other. Perhaps the message of this film was that the "techno-sapien" was more human and more alive with feelings than either of the human parents. If so, message received. I came away from After Yang feeling zero empathy for the parents or their spoiled child. But I did like Yang's "girlfriend."

I was disappointed to see a young child who enjoys the games, toys and clothing usually associated with the "opposite" gender as being transgender. Shouldn't boys be allowed to play with "girls" toys and wear dresses? After all girls are able to play with "boys" toys and wear pants. We are a long way from gender freedom folks.

This film has many layers to it and since I love visual clues in movies, I enjoyed the recurring themes of Justice the mythical fish, the black cat, Plymouth Island, etc. But the best part of the movie for me was this - and spoiler alert - while the movie doesn't make this completely clear, it IS how I interpret it. Spoiler Alert ahead! You were warned! Yes, the dad is an artificial intelligence created by the genius son. But he is more than that. He is also the dad's soul and has been enrolled into the game his son has created, precisely because he has not made peace with his own death and he misses his son. The true genius of the computer game this young man designed is that it crosses over into other realms of reality.
