Hotel Coolgardie, a documentary (shot in 2012) that's been compared to 1971's nightmare thriller Wake In Fright, follows two young Finnish backpackers, Lina and Stephie, as they're plonked in the middle of the desert by a company that recruits women like them to engage in temporary bar work servicing towns that don't attract many long-term residents (and certainly not many – if any – young women).
It becomes clear very quickly that their job is more than just pulling beers and managing a few loose units. These women are a fixation for the men who frequent the pub, most of whom fully expect that the promise of sexual relations is part of the deal.
With no security to back them up, and with a boss whose singular concern is how quickly they're refilling the customers' drinks, the two girls are left to navigate on their own these often increasingly threatening interactions, almost all of which are predicated on the men's sense of sexual entitlement and expectation.
As director Pete Gleeson tells Fairfax Media, "how the women adapted to the dominant culture determined everything, from whether they could have enjoyable tourist experiences, to whether they could get a lift into town to buy groceries, to even their meals". They can play nice with the locals, or face the consequences of continued – and likely increasingly aggro – harassment.
