I enjoyed this book immensely! I was born in 1940, so memories of my childhood abounded! The after-dinner gathering of parents, the firefly-chasing evenings with neighboring children and the later menaces of war and polio are all familiar to me. Like the youngsters in this book, we became more adventurous as we approached our teens, and while nothing as dramatic as the turn of events in this fictional account visited our small group, we were often engaged in foolhardy disobedience which luckily resulted in nothing more damaging than the punishments our parents meted out. The frightening high-drama finish is well written, making this book a joy from start to finish.
