Queen Olivia seamlessly replaces Queen Claire in unbosoming a probably fairly accurate and empathetic account of the life of Queen Elizabeth II. The series has turned me from being agnostic on the monarchy to being in favour. Behind the crowd waving from gilded coach to palace balcony, did we ever realise that, as His Royal Highness Matt Smith suggested exactly one full season ago, that Elizabeth Rex and Royal Consort Phillip lived in a kind of “Prison”? S3E1 is brilliantly full of double entendres and after five minutes I found myself accustomed and content with the accession of Olivia Colman to the Crown accompanied by Simon Menzies, who I last say in “The Hunt” at the Almeida. I resist binge watching series three as I want to draw out the pleasure of watching Olivia Colman as long as possible. She is quite the star. Long may she reign, sparkling up our lives.
