I think it has its ups and downs but for me it was good overall. I might just really like the premise of the murder hotel inspired by real life serial killer H.H. Holmes. Mild spoilers ahead.
Upside:The story over all was interesting. It keeps you on edge with premise alone because you never know what is a trap. Some kills are difficult to even see coming. Making me have to move the character to a hiding spot always caused a small rush trying to find it. In the intro chapter Mr.Holmes is the perfect cliché of creepy hotel owner all but twisting his mustache. The same subtle B Horror humor keeps up in the future where the new killer acts much like Michael Myers. Silent, only walking, and seemingly teleporting to slow chase various characters. I know there's hidden tunnels through the hotel to aid with that but did he mine out underground tunnels for a minecart to bring him across the whole island in two seconds? Ha!
Neutral: There's possibility for dog death if that's something you want to avoid. The characters aren't boring but I also didn't find myself endeared to anyone.
The downside: There are a lot of cheap jump scares. The more annoying predictable one is the killer walking past frame where he cant see you accompanied by loud music. It happens so often. If you explore a lot in a climbing section until dialog is expended you'd think the characters were jumping hurdles instead of taking a big step up with how loud they grunt every time. Thankfully it's more annoying mostly in the beginning. When you move something to climb into a window/ledge you may find yourself getting off and on the object without control instead of going into the window/ledge
All in all it has its bugs and weak spots but the story mostly makes up for it. I'd say it's on par with Man of Medan or a hair better but not as good as Until Dawn and The Quarry. It's a good game not a great one but I had fun playing it
