Kate Jones

Oh dear. How disappointing. Like millions of others, I loved the book. I also loved Daisy Edgar Jones in Normal People and thought she was a perfect choice to play Kya. But from the first minute with the naff camera sweep taken from above a flying heron, I sensed this was going to be a vanilla adaptation of the book. Daisy was wasted in the part. The wildness of the wonderful Kya was lost and the irresistible spell cast by the character / place combination in the book, utterly broken. I left after an hour. Soggy, vanilla and dismal.

This is serious viewing: deeply disturbing, very realistic, profoundly human and totally gripping drama. Brilliantly cast. Not for the faint hearted or for those seeking light relief. But thought provoking portrayal of prison life and its impact, as well as an expiration of what it means to be a man, a parent, one who makes terrible mistakes and why, and remorse and forgiveness. Brilliant.
