Game play and graphics are on part with other video games if it kind, but narrative speaking it is a mess. From the fist half hour the story does not draw you in, which leave a bad taste in your mouth and you expect it to get worse like every other bad horror movie you might have seen.
With a very interesting narrative of "the circle of violence" they, naughty Dog, seem to miss the mark on multiple areas. Even with the tonal whiplash you sometime get lost in the supposedly unnerving violence that both of the protagonist take part in. There is very little to time to digest the consequences of your actions as you are passed off to another character to conduct more pointless actions of rampaging violence. This was not the "cycle of violence" I was expecting.
For both characters, this disconnect between the gameplay and the grander narrative is compounded by looting and collectible-hunting. Looting during a fight is exciting, especially when you find the one extra bullet you need or a bit of health that can keep you going. But, this necessity takes away from the message that the developers seemingly wanted on display for the player to reflex on "the violence".
It's a bleak, pessimistic world, and exploration issues aside, might leave some players unwilling to leave it , as they search for more meaning for this short game. This game can be completed in a weekend. The ending was predictable, for me, and forgettable unlike the Last of Us story ending. In the end I would wait for this game to come out on sale or for free on Playstation Plus.
