WW84.
So. Not going to point out all the nonsensical plot holes in the storyline. Plenty of reviewers have done it, so google them all if need be. The movie tried to celebrate so many awesome and familiar tropes/themes.. but did it all in such a farcical manner that it gave me severe heartburn 🤢
Here are some movies - mainly superhero ones - that did it better: nuanced and subtle but still powerful.
MAIN THEME: Be careful what you wish for/ Be grateful for what you have
-Doctor Strange.. think of Kaecilius, think of Mordo’s famous line “The bill comes due. Always.”
-Avengers: Infinity War/End Game..the price one has to pay to obtain the Soul stone
THEME 2: Women kick butt - be they heroes or villains - and should be allowed to do anything a man is allowed to! 💪🏼
-Black Panther .. the Dora Milajes yes, but hell ALL the women!
-Thor: Ragnarok .. how awesome was Hela as a villain? And oooo the Valkyries!
-Captain Marvel.. wait a second..did DC also try to pull off the “young girl of colour” fan in WW84?
-Incredibles 2 .. yes an animation did a better job
... and guess what? they ALL rocked WITHOUT bashing the entire male population.
THEME 3: Campy/cheesy humour
Every other superhero movie from Marvel; but my personal favourites..
-Thor: Ragnarok
-Deadpool
THEME 4a. For the greater good of humanity.. renounce your selfish ways
Just dropping ONE name: Tony
THEME 4b. One needs to renounce greed and consumerism for the good of all humanity - this is the universal truth..
The film criticizes consumerism, corporatocracy, waste management, human environmental impact and concerns, and global catastrophic risk.
No I am not talking about WW84.
I am talking about WALL•E!
An animation did a better job. Again.
THEME 5: And so - Villains are enlightened and turn over a new leaf
Dropping my favourite here.. Loki
Finally, every movie in the MCU platform are connected in one way or another. Plots/subplots within each film helps to solidify the chronological order of things.
DC... well ... is all shambles.
For example, WW84 supposedly builds on Diana’s character BUT
-if Diana can fly in 1984, how come in Justice League which was at present time, she can't?
-8 year old Diana being trained at the start of the film despite how in the first movie her mother does not wish to train her from a young age.
-didn’t she tell Bruce Wayne she had been in hiding for a decade? She is definitely not hiding in ‘84!
In conclusion:
DC needs to stop being so selfish and just stop making these movies.
For the good of all humanity.
