Just managed to get hold of the BFI DVD. Firstly, Hammerstein's lyrics and screenplay are both pure genius. The performances sizzle and smoke. The widescreen photography is never less than stunning; and the newly restored sound is awesome. The editing is remarkable, cutting to the very bone, for a taught, dramatic and smoldering tour-de-force of fifties musical cinema at its very best. It isn't better than the original opera, but every bit as good; in its own way. Why oh why has this gorgeous film not been committed to blu-ray? Film directors of today should study this film and learn the art of great film making. One of the living classics of the cinema!
