The beginning held so much promise. Unfortunately, redundancy, stereotypes, and overarching cliches left me disappointed by the end. However, I did appreciate the various narrative styles. Trina’s character began with a strong sense of self esteem and made me want to share in her artwork with her. I enjoyed the vibrant, respectful look at Trina’s subjects of art portraits. I wanted to see Malcom X, Harriet Tubman, etc... Leticia’s character ruined the book for me. The big disappointment came in the end, after all the hype over a girl fight, to leave readers with that kind of unlikely, overdone outcome felt bizarre.
