The story is amazing and ahead of its time honestly. It's a slow game but worth the while. I seen a recent review that gave a 4/10 mentioning the gameplay mechanics which are difficult and probably the most outdated in the game but for a 2002 open world game you cant mark it for that . Its competition was gta 3 which had better gameplay but mafia beats it with story and immersion
