I loved The Downward Spiral. Each song oozes with crushing defeat, poisonous anger (both self directed and at unnamed lovers, for example in the song Reptile, a 7 minute colossal of imposing industrial noises, the occasional laughter of children, and Trent Reznor's vocals, which swells from bitter and low to desperate near screams.) For the subject of the album, which could be taken to be either Trent Reznor himself or a downtrodden, utterly depressed fictitious character, he is simply too far gone: his only choices are escapism, or self destruction and suicide.
Here are some of my favourite lyrics from the album: 'Hey pig piggy pig pig pig
All of my fears came true
Black and blue and broken bones you left me here i'm all alone
My little piggy needed something new
Nothing can stop me now
I don't care anymore'
'Devils speak of the way in which she'll manifest
Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress
Need to contaminate to alleviate this loneliness
I now know the depths I reach are limitless'
'Everything's blue in this world
He couldn't believe how easy it was
(he put the gun into his face)
Bang!
(so much blood for such a tiny little hole)'
