To the degree that one can the viewer must have a knowledge of both Nicholas (the director) and Heller (the author) to appreciate this film. It got some bad reviews by people who did not make the effort to do either. If you are a veteran of any conflict or (for that matter) had occasion to serve in the US military this film ranks with “Dr. Strangelove” as one of the greatest records of the absurdity of war.
