This was great fun, and Netflix did a surprisingly good job of honouring the vibe of the original source material, whilst also understanding they would get roasted for attempting a 1:1 recreation so striking out on their own. I really appreciated the little nods, such as adapting little visual scenes or dialogue from the anime then spinning it off into something new. They cared enough to get original show runner Watanabe Shinichiro in to supervise, and Kanno Yoko to handle the soundtrack, and it shows.
Unfortunately anime fans are a bunch of grouchy gatekeepers and have to done their best to - and seemingly succeeded at - killing this show. A shame. I won't pretend I didn't have some small issues with the plots woven, but they were also clearly leading up to another season and we'll never get the pay-off now.
Give this a go, and if you're a fan of the original work, just relax and give it a chance. An American adaptation finally did right by an anime, let's not discourage good behaviour like this!
