Huge fan of the original katamari as a single player was absolutely expecting it to exceed my expectations and of course it was more than a little disappointing. In reroll there aren't as many cousins you don't get to choose who you are The presents aren't really as fun or as plentiful. Some of my favorite things about the first katamari was the beautiful rainbow that came at the end of finishing a level. Of course it was older technology and I expected that would get even better however this was not the case. I also didn't expect of all things to be improved that the robot would have a more pronounced and defined junk area. In the middle of a level there used to be the sucky uppy things, That would either basically pull in everything that was around you, or if you got the one with the heart in the middle it acted as the Mario Brothers star did and basically instead of giving you invincibility would give you sucky up a power for about 10 seconds no matter where you rolled. This no longer exists, unfortunately, along with the inability to jump. Some of the levels in this land are exact duplicates of some of the other levels but you can't jump and you don't have the ability to have the sucky uppy things... so it's really not as fun. I haven't played two player mode but I feel like as a fan of the first game that was a one player mode it maybe should have catered to its audience. I love this game so much, I think it's so fun and creative I really appreciate all the programming that went into it and all the art direction that went into the first one... and I had really high expectations for all the amazing things they could do with increased computer graphics and unfortunately a lot of the really fun and creative things that were in the first one weren't used as a baseline and improved upon for this reroll.
I agree with the review that the controls aren't as good in this version, you can't "speed" roll in the same way or as easily, there's less items to pick up and more fall out when you very easily run in to other items, it just feels sloppy.
Biggest playing peeve is as you are receiving instructions as the level starts, it no longer auto plays through... You have to hit X button through EVERY SCREEN to start playing, and whenever the king interrupts your play you have to hit through to get him to stop talking to allow the re-start up of game play.
Looking to forward to see what comes out in the future from Bandai Namco. This is one of the only games Ive played for many many years when I want to play a video game.
Thanks, big fan!
