At some points it almost tricked me into liking it. But the whole time I was watching it, it felt like they were right on the edge of doing something right without ever going all the way there.
Ultimately, I'd say it was a short movie that wasn't unenjoyable per say, but certainly didn't meet up to the expectations laid by the successful book series.
There was so much world building and exposition to lay out, but the movie's run time is only 1hr 35min, as a result the story felt very rushed. Characters were introduced in a hectic blur.
I'm not one to indiscriminately declare "the book was better" regardless of the feature but in this case, there were indeed many changes made, and most of them didn't seem to serve any true purpose.
Why change the impetus behind the actions of Artemis? Why downplay the unapologetic classic villainous core of his character? Why turn a thrilling heist into a typical hostage situation? Why sugarcoat the genius technology of the fairy world and label it all "magic"?
And storytelling aside, the acting as well was either too over the top (like Mulch) or too flat (like Artemis). And alparently no one could decide what accent to go with.
I just-- this fell so short for me.
