I was really excited about a TV adaptation of the books, I am currently on booked 11 of the series and was looking forward to starting the show with the books fresh in mind. I understand the need to adapt TV/movies from the books where necessary, but I feel as if the story was rushed and too much focus was put on the portion of the audience to hasn't read the books. I think this was a grave mistake, given that the most excited viewers are the readers of the series and that the show would seem confusing to someone who isn't familiar with the series. I am not sure I will bother to watch season 2 at this point. I felt they should have made the first season longer, more episodes with more time for character building and less rushed. If I hadn't read the books and watched this I would have been very lost after the first few episodes. There were many unnecessary changes made that didn't need to be made. The character building was just not there. Many of the characters are not true to their book-selves. Lan is supposed to be very hard, and Nynaeve is supposed to be the one who kind of makes him feel again and brings something out in him. They didn't deliver that. Their relationship is too rushed. Moraine and the other Aes Sedai are renowned for their "aes Sedai calm" and people never knowing where you stand with them, which was not portrayed in the show. They come across as regular people, showing all their emotions and leave no mystery. I am not impressed with the graphics, and a small thing that I could get past if the rest of the show wasn't so poorly done is the way they portray the one power. It's blueish shimmering tendrils are very unrealistic and take away from the show. In the book they use the elements of fire, spirit, water and earth and I would have liked to see the colors representing those in the weaves. I could look past that, but after finishing the first season I couldn't help but wonder if the creators bothered to even read the books they were loosely basing the show on. I would have preferred if they had maybe just created this series and given it a different name, such as "The Pattern" and just stated "loosely based off of the wheel of time" I could have been much more accepting of it knowing they were just doing their own thing, and not actually trying to adapt the series from book to TV. Some changes were good, I understand the change with perrins wife, an event to give voice to his silence throughout the books that would have been difficult to portray on TV otherwise. I also thought making the characters slightly older on TV made sense. But over all I felt the show was sloppy, rushed and poorly thought out. You had 14 books to work with... TONS of material to make a long lasting show and THIS was the best they could do!? I can look past the graphics for a good show, but the story has not been told well. I expected more.
