Just saw it today and enjoyed all the Monster fun. It's one of those films that was so close to a home run they could have tasted it.
They made some great choices in casting making sure not to overcast the monsters.
Again so close. The Monster sequences are excellent and I really loved the cinematography of this diffused color pallet that felt black and white.
This miss that kept this film from stepping out from behind the curtain and really signing was the choices of filming of the actors.
It was - to put a simple yet fine point on it - klunky and forced. Whereas they made a great choice on the monsters they missed to the left with texture of actor shots.
Fantastic monster texture - flat, stiff and uninspired shots of actors,
It was really strange that they missed. Not bad, but just enough to throw the film of center. It got in the way of liking both the Monster characters and actor characters. It just didn't mesh completely.
They should have made a different choice of texture diffusion on Actors.
In my Saturday afternoon matinee when it ended there was a break out of applause, some enthusiastic. Which is rare these days.
So if you like a good ole monster movie you will like, maybe love it.
If you don't and are not jaded you should like it and feel entertained.
If your a little jaded like myself - you'll leave secretly hiding a little side mouth smile knowing as much as you were disappointed in the afore mentioned goof you could not help but like it for what it was - a good ole monster flick.
