Picked this game up on a total whim thinking the concept and front cover (yes, seriously!) was cool. Until about 5 minutes ago, and prior to writing this review, I was completely unaware of the hype or backstory of this game.
TL; DR:
My total playtime was about 2 hours until I had to stop and gave up. I was so bored that I noticed that I was checking Reddit during the dialogue, and just hitting the square button at whatever conversational response was highlighted at the top. The final straw was when the game crashed after entering a club, and I just thought to myself “Oh well, never mind!” and I proceeded to delete the game from my PS4.
What comes next are my own personal opinions of the game. I feel as though I don’t have any emotion attached to this, as I didn’t wait 8 years for this game to come out. However, I must state that I played their other game, The Witcher, and I thought that was boring too, despite the good reviews.
Firstly, I didn’t understand the story & was bored by about 30 minutes, but I really tried to persist onwards to see if it got more exciting. It didn’t. I had no idea who V was, what she was doing, why she was there, where I was, who Jackie was or how I knew him. Honestly no idea. Even now, I couldn’t tell you the story of what I have just played for over 2 hours. A backstory for a complete noob like me would have been really helpful. I also dislike the 1st person point of view in this game intensely. Everything is so close up, in your face, and your field of vision is horrible. I spent quite a bit of time customising the character to look awesome, but I never saw her except when I stood in front of a mirror. I was really disappointed when there was no setting to switch to a 3rd person perspective. The combat system was unfamiliar and clunky, to say the least. I’m a casual gamer, and I prefer games which have the “usual” controls, so you don’t have to invest time into learning new ones. The system was so overly complicated. I couldn’t even figure out how to switch weapons or equip new ones. I know that this aspect of a game is something that some people will admire & respect, and call it “attention to detail”. I must admit it has a lot of that, but for me, I just want to pick up and play with a decent story.
Another thing that switched me off during gameplay, was that the dialogue was so boring, as I mentioned above, I found myself switching off during the character interactions. I was also waiting for things to load for, what felt like, ages. Having completed the Spiderman series and maxing them both out to 100% completion before playing this game, it really was an absolute snooze fest and a serious mistake to play this afterwards. Oh, and another thing you should know is that the game performed with serious lag and slow frame rates on my PS4. The fans were really struggling to keep up. I have never played a game on my PS4 where it has lagged before.
Now that I have read about the hype & how long this game took to make, I’m absolutely shocked to say the least. I can 100% understand why this game is so controversial.
Personally, the game just wasn’t for me, but it has the potential to be good for someone else with more a bit more patience.
