Unlike others who saw this as a beautiful movie, I found it totally lacking in reality. If the intention was to celebrate the deaf community and their acceptance of deafness, then it was successful. However, the portrayal of Cochlear Implants was terribly misrepresented. If one were considering this life changing miracle, then the movie might well dissuade him or her from making this important decision.
I am an implant recipient of six month, a musician, have experienced severe hearing loss on my left side, and total hearing loss on my right. I can control what I hear and if collateral noise is over bearing I shut it out or tone it down. On the other hand, I perceive it as a wonderful gift that I can once again hear all of the worldly sounds. And I'm learning to hear, perform, and enjoy music again.
The movie could and should have celebrated the deaf community's embracement of deafness and Ruben's journey without demeaning the miracle of implants.
