I only watched this film recently, thinking it would not be my type of genre. However I have to say I was deeply moved. I am not someone who particularly enjoys walking uphill, let alone mountain climbing but having visited Whistler in Canada as a tourist, on arrival I could definitely see what all the fuss was about,
I think some people not only seek danger and adventure, but also have an overwhelming desire to raise above their human restrictions and be closer to or touch the power some call God and some call nature.
I believe the film captured that and also the desperation of the inability to physically go into survival mode in the face of one's own death or act for others. The body has shut down and there is longing is for the mind to follow swiftly.
