Nice little on the road buddy movie. It’s bits and pieces of better films strung together. There are some touching moments between the grizzled old cowboy and the young angry boy as they become friends and both learn to love and trust again. Most of it is cliche and the relationships are purely superficial. The ending in particular, unsatisfying. Like they got to the end of the story and just wrapped it up with little thought. No heart. Especially frustrating because all the elements were there so it could have been really good.
The one thing I found really annoying is that we were expected to suspend disbelief and accept that the sexy grandma, beautifully acted, would develop a thing for a 91 year old man. I love that Eastwood directed and acted but come on, he can barely walk or move his upper torso. Arrogance on his part to think an audience would find that believable. Not many 91 year old lead love interests out there and this film illustrates why. I’m betting he’d never direct a film where the roles were reversed.. still and all, a non demanding enjoyable watch on a slow Saturday night.
