You cannot compare BR Chopra's depiction to today's Mahabharat, Suryaputra Karn, Radha Krisha etc. The latter are really really great serials, hands down
But the kind of rendition BR Chopra has delivered, one will get a feeling that this is no Mahabharat "serial", its the "REAL" Mahabharat, as if these were the same characters, this was the exact situation, words said, etc, one is bound to get a feel that they are in some time machine and getting to see the real Mahabharat.

I am really really frustrated. Since the time I watched this movie, I have been looking for downloading it, or purchasing its DVD.
But it seems that Rajya Sabhya TV did not bother to release it after it was removed from the theatres
