I did enjoy the book, although the first half was unbearably slow, relentless and depressing. It was based on what I consider a number of false premises: first of all, why would a woman so obviously depressed and addicted, and a former social worker herself, be allowed to live alone?
I know she had no family, but surely one of her doctors or someone would have suspected.
Secondly, why would Anna have let the woman she thought was Jane into her home? She was a total stranger. In a small town, maybe; in NYC, no.
Third, why did Anna not call the police after Alistair attacked her & she had bruises and broken glass to prove the break-in and attack?
Fourth, why did she sleep with David in her obviously addled state?
And last, when Ethan supposedly "confessed" to her, why did she say she'd wait a day to report it to the police, thus setting herself up for the attack?
If anyone has any answers to these questions, I'd love to hear them. Obviously there would be no story if the logic in these premises were followed.
