Incredible series, my wife was right to believe that Ripley was going to beat the system. One question - I wondered if the role of Freddie was played by a woman which led me to look up the cast of characters. Was the idea to make Freddie's identity ambiguous, suggesting that Freddie was trans, casting light on Dickie's sexual orientation? jazzpsy

Season 4, Episode 1, was a bust. The humor fell flat, and felt forced. And this was my favorite show. The ending was better, let's hope that the ship can be righted.

I was ready to turn it off after 5 minutes. Other than for Jude Law, the acting was very stiff, but I quickly took the bait and got snared by the very clever and funny Woody Allen situations and dialogue. I did cringe during the beyond the pale scene when Gatsby is told by his mother how she met his father.

The depiction of the jazz scene is very realistic. The music, straight ahead, very hip, with very accomplished musicians. Can't give it 5 stars because both my wife and I being dependent on captions find it frustrating, because this being a French language production, there are no captions for the English dialogue.I can't comment on the dramatic quality, but the final scene in Episode 1 is very moving. The actress playing Julie is superb.

Interesting, sensitive, intelligent performances.
