There something to admire about this film. The technology, editing, and martial arts are over-the-top. The idea of representing a multi-verse is cool. But the frantic cutaways left me befuddled, like I was missing the punchline. Conflict/combat. Conflict/combat. Conflict/combat. Like gaming. I couldn't capture any sense of meaning, connection, or sympathy for characters. I love what Stephen Kessler says about blockbuster phenomena like this, in a newspaper column: He's looking for "intimate, intelligent, unsensational stories... told by artists with the courage to explore difficult subjects and complex human behavior with nuanced sensibility and moral ambiguity." I agree with the rest of his piece. More and more movies are failing to deliver art. Instead they appeal to the senses, the ego, pride, and tribalism.
