Now I bet the people cast in this film are incredibly nice people in real life, and they could be very good in a film that suited them. But this film isn't it.
The mom comes off as way too strict and snappy, and she doesn't give off a real mom vibe at all. The actress in the real movies was perfect for her role as Greg's mom, but this actress is...no.
I really wish that they gave the dad more lines because he's very boring. Steve Zahn's performance as Greg's dad was funny and memorable. What does this dad have to offer?
Greg's actor doesn't play the role well at all; in the real movies, Greg is a sarcastic jerk, but he learns something about family or about friends at the end of every movie. In this, Greg is an utter loser who isn't relatable at all; becoming a meme isn't an everyday thing that everyone has been through.
Manny is obnoxious.
Rowley is on the screen for 5 seconds, even though he's a major character in the books and real movies.
And finally, Rodrick. Where do I start with poor Charlie Wright's performance? He's gotten so much hate because of this film, and I have nothing against this guy; just his performance as Rodrick. Devon Bostick was absolutely flawless as Rodrick; he was dumb, but it wasn't forced at all. In this movie, Rodrick's dumbness is BEYOND forced, and he's so disrespectful to his mom that you can't help but dislike him.
Overall, this cast has no chemistry at all. I don't have enough energy to dive deeper into the plot of this movie, so all I talked about was the cast. They don't even look alike; Rodrick looks like he was kidnapped.
