This is a sentimental tear-jerker. Hanks can't be faulted for his performance, only for his choice to be in this film. It has the craft and heft of Hollywood behind its filmic and scenic production, but the writing is intellectually insulting, and the narrative filled with too many holes to even list.
I'm tempted to say it's a children's film, but I'd be ashamed to recommend it to my elementary school grandkids. Hanks' soothing presence lulled me into watching the whole thing. Like eating tainted deli-store sushi, a moment of mild pleasure has turned into a day long nightmare.
