While I like the idea of presenting anti-racist material to young readers, as a former elementary teacher I am appalled at the ending of this book where the parent made to look like a fool by way of the child's disagreement and fight with the mother. There are other ways of presenting this material to young readers without adding in scenes of domestic discord. Older, teenage readers may be able to grapple with the idea that their parents are less than perfect, but this is a very risky approach with younger readers. I would prefer a more positive approach between a protagonist child and their parent in a book targeting young readers.
