Although it has been many years since reading this book I do remember distinctly being in awe of what the human spirit can endure when placed in horrific conditions. Observing through Ivan's eyes otherwise reasonable people becoming violent when competing for basic human needs, food, warm clothing etc.touch my soul and was my first encounter with the psychology of survival. Beautifully written account of the experience of being sentenced to and living in a gulag.
