It's basically Poldark with Martians. I have been asking for years for an adaptation of War of the Worlds set in its original timeframe and in England. The last two adaptations have all been set in modern day America and the full military might has been thrown against the aliens.
Now we would see how a world just after the first flight, before there were many cars and no tanks would fight the invasion (only the royal navy which was the biggest in the world) would be able to give us a chance.
Instead we had a modern day romance set over 100 years ago. The three legged spiders from Mars with knives for legs (how did they build the tripods?) Set about skiewing old ladies and making Mr Spall frown a lot. The post apocalyptic scenes were well done and thankfully the reason for the Martian demise was kept the same (You couldn't change that).
I was hoping for a version like Jeff Wayne's rock opera (without Justin Haywood) but got a tedious yawn of an adaptation that was a just like a modern day Doctor Who episode. I was half expecting a whirring phone box to appear, where is Jodie Whittaker when you need her?
