Lata is the anti thesis of an independent woman. Though initially charming, she turns irritating in the second half when she leads three men on, while knowing quite well that all three were in love with her, so she could have her pick while wasting everyone's time and energy. Her "independent" choice is nothing but her cowardice, she didn't want to get involved with a Muslim because her family wouldn't approve and she didn't want the poet because she didn't take poetry as a serious profession. Lata's mother is the most annoying character apart from the begum.
The politics of the series is clearly liberal (mind you, it is anti left wing, showing the only socialist as a madman). Haven't read the book but I am sure it's worse than this adaptation. I wasted one night's sleep on this beautifully made shit story. The actors are good but the story is just not nearly good enough.
