I would probably give this 5 stars but comparing it to Inspector Morse from which Lewis is a spin off and Endeavour which is a prequel to Inspector Morse this is the least favorable of this group of shows. All three shows show the conflict between working class law enforcement and intellectual class of Oxford, England. I think one has to enjoy British mystery shows to enjoy Lewis. They are certainly slower paced to American mystery shows. If you need faster paced and edgier then Endeavour would be a better choice. Watching Inspector Lewis develop from sergeant on Inspector Morse is fascinating and enjoyable.
