Mixed bag. Many elements are authentic and wrenching. Overall though the story becomes more about Fern individually than the nomads and itinerant labor force her character represents. It would have hit much harder had Fern not been shown to have options outside of that life. It does a disservice to the real people living that life out of necessity.
